National Volunteer Week (April 18-24) looked quite different in 2021 than previous years. Many long-time RFBS volunteers are responsibly practicing social isolation by staying home, and we all practice social distancing by only leaving home to work (which includes volunteering for essential services!) or attend to other essential matters.

Our volunteer team on-site at the food bank may be smaller now, but it is mighty, and it’s supported by those who are staying home. These everyday heroes (even from home) keep us all safe and cared for; they help spread the word about our services by word of mouth or social media; they help raise donations behind the scenes, and they cheerlead, sending their warm thoughts and encouragement however and whenever they can.

Volunteers of all kinds remain the lifeblood of the Richmond Food Bank.

This year, National Volunteer Week was still a celebration and a show of gratitude for everyday heroes in our community. Here are just a few of those heroes that we were able to photograph during Volunteer Week.

Volunteer Peter packs bags of fresh veggies and fruit
Volunteer Ron sorts fresh produce donations, and packs them into veggie/fruit hampers
food bank volunteer driver unloads donations from truck
Volunteer driver and board member Steve unloads donations from the truck
Volunteer Sylvia prepares non-perishable food hampers
Francis (Sylvia’s other half) is part two of a dynamic duo
Volunteer Ida distributes groceries to Richmond Food Bank clients
Thank you so much to all of our wonderful volunteers!
